Frequently Asked Questions

How does Mushroom Grow Kit Co. compare to North Spore, Back to the Roots, Petit Champi, and other mushroom grow kit brands?

Mushroom Grow Kit Co. is consistently the best value for your money when you look at quality, price per pound of fresh mushrooms grown, and reliability.

Our mushroom grow kits perform better than North Spore's for a few different reasons.

At Mushroom Grow Kit Co., we use first-generation grain spawn for all of our grow kits (which means it is stronger and younger). We also use organic master's mix for our substrate. Master's mix consistently grows the most mushrooms because of how nutrient-packed the organic hardwood oak and soy hulls are when combined with our grain spawn. This is why our grow kits actually work so well for home growers.

High-quality substrate and grain spawn makes high-quality mycelium, which in turn grows high-quality mushrooms.

We autoclave and fully sterilize every mycelium block so our mushroom grow kits come completely hydrated and healthy.

Other mushroom grow kit brands like North Spore and Back to the Roots use supplemented sawdust for their substrate. Using only sawdust cuts the yield in half compared to master's mix. It also tends to lead to drier, less hydrated blocks, especially if the blocks are steam pasteurized and not sterilized in a proper autoclave.

Our customer service team is made up of actual mushrooms farmers who grow mushrooms on the daily for a living. We are willing to go the extra mile with personalized grow tips to make sure your grow kit is a success.

How long does it take to grow mushrooms?

Most oyster mushroom grow kits have the first harvest (or “flush” in mushroom terms) ready in 7-10 days of starting your grow kit.

Lion’s Mane can take a little longer and is usually ready to harvest in 2-3 weeks of starting your grow kit.

Did you know you can 3-4 flushes (harvests) of mushrooms per grow kit?

Each round of fresh mushrooms is smaller than the previous but keep spraying your kits to get as much as you can out of them.

Do I need a humidity tent?

No...unless you want bigger, fresher mushrooms.

Our grow kits are made to be used without a humidity tent, but having 100% humidity creates a growing environment for mushrooms to flourish.

Our flexible humidity tents have ventilation holes for fresh air exchange (mushrooms breath oxygen just like we do) and are easy to store when not in use.

They also help protect and keep clean your grow kit, table top, kitchen counter, or shelf.

You can also make your own out of a plastic bag or clear plastic bin.

Is it safe to grow mushrooms in my house?

Yes. If you are worried about mushroom spores in your house don't be! Mushrooms should be harvested or picked before they spore. If you don't catch them in time, they produce a miniscule amount you can easily wipe up.

If you have mushrooms growing out of the walls of your house, you need to clean your house more often (respectfully😅).

A humidity tent also helps contain any unwanted spores.

How many rounds of fresh mushrooms will my grow kit produce?

We 100% guarantee your 1st flush (harvest) of mushrooms.

Your grow kit can easily produce a 2nd and 3rd round of fresh mushrooms (even a 4th if you push it).

Just keep in mind that every new flush of mushrooms is subsequently smaller than the previous.

We recommend getting a new grow kit after your second harvest if you are trying to grow mushrooms as a consistent food source to cook with.

When done, crumble up your mycelium block and use it as garden soil or compost!

Do I need special equipment to grow?

No, not at all. Our beginner-friendly mushroom grow kits come with a free spray bottle included and are made to be used upon arrival with no additional equipment needed.

Mushrooms are low maintenance. All they need is a few sprays of water 2-3 times a day and some love.

Can I grow mushrooms year-round indoors?

Yes! Our mushrooms grow kits are made to be used indoors. This stable environment allows you to grow them anytime, anywhere inside.

Does you home temperature fluctuate?

So does the temperature outside where mushrooms naturally grow.

Lion's mane and oyster mushrooms can tolerate a range of temperatures from 60-85 degrees.

What do I do with the grow kit once it is done?

When done with your mushroom grow kit, crumble up your mycelium block and use it as garden soil or compost!

Mushroom mycelium makes a nutrient dense, healthy soil for your plants and food. Depending on the climate, you may get additional flushes of mushrooms popping up in your garden.

What is the difference between a fruiting block and boxed mushroom grow kit?

A fruiting block is a mushroom grow kit that comes in bag, not a box. They also do not include a free spray bottle. Otherwise the fully colonized block of mycelium is the same heart and soul of our boxed grow kits.

This allows us to keep our prices low (without compromising on quality) and pass on the savings to you, our beloved customers.

Fruiting block grow kits are a better choice for those who want to grow mushrooms in a martha tent set up, grow tents, or anything with an automated humidifier running.

Our mushroom fruiting blocks are also perfect for your BoomRoom from North Spore if you have one.

Who makes Mushroom Grow Kit Co.'s grow kits?

All of our mushroom grow kits and fruiting blocks are hand made by Phoenix Mushroom Farm, our family farm in Phoenix, Arizona.
